Our Story
Hello, my name is Hazel and I am the leader of Jean's House. and I live in Southampton.
In 2018, I was approached to be part of the Friends of Jean's House as with my sister Jane we have been supporting the charity for 15 years. Very sadly our mum, Lesley died aged 59 in 2008. Lesley was a senior lecturer in social work, with many years experience of supporting families and their children at Solent University. When Lesley was poorly, she didn’t want sympathy for herself, but would often say ‘I just think of what it must be like for children and young people with cancer’. Lesley had stipulated that at her funeral, rather than flowers, she wanted family and friends to donate to Young Lives vs Cancer. In 2009, my sister and I organised a Memorial Ball to remember our lovely mum and have had one every year (apart from during the pandemic) .
In 2018, when the Friends of Jean's House Fundraising Group was set up, the local Fundraising Engagement Manager, asked Hazel and I to be part of the group and I became the group leader. Along with my sister Jane, Tamryn (treasurer), Peter and Alice, the group was formed. All funds raised now go directly to Jean's House.
Jeans House is a beautiful facility providing accommodation for families whose children are receiving their cancer treatment in Southampton General Hospital. All funds raised now go directly to Jeans House. Our fundraising group is a small team of local people. We work together to undertake 3 projects a year. We have done many bucket collections in local supermarkets, held a Bring & Buy clothes exchange evening, held raffles, book sales and attended local events. It is an absolute privilege to for Young Lives vs Cancer, and support fund raising for Jean's House. We would really appreciate any support that you can give to support this home in our local community. Thank you very much.
